Greetings! My husband and I have a Pro Tools HD2 recording studio in our home. He is a gifted musician and I am doing voiceover work. Specifically for this work, I have a Mojave MA-200 mic, an Aphex 230 preamp and are in the process of building an iso booth. Right now we are using a spare room and adjusting the sound to eliminate noise.
Once I get a demo loaded, I will post to get critiques. Any suggestions are welcome. Sue Last edited by SueColas; 04-01-2008 at 09:46 AM. |

Hi Joe,
Thank you for the reply and welcome. It got quiet in here all of a sudden. Wow to you, too! My husband and I just listened to every one of the demos on your website and we both hear not only the level of quality and professionalism but also can tell you have great fun with what you do. On the animation reel, did you use any effects or is it all intonation and inflection? What equipment do you use? My husband is a composer/arranger/musician so I use his music for many of my demos. I would have replied earlier but we were in the studio all day working on a beautiful song he arranged and co-wrote. Thank you again for the welcome and it is an honor to be in this forum with high talent. I am anxious to hear from the others! Sue Colas |

Hey Sue,
Sometimes the VO's here get a bit shy ;-) Thanks much for the kudos on my demos, and YES! It's a lot of fun for me... The animation demos (and the others too) are just my voice. Little if any processing was added to the mix. The produced one does have music and effects, tho. My main 2 demos were recorded at a studio. The rest use my home setup (Shure SM-58, PreSonus TubePre, Sony Vaio, Sound Forge). Singing really helps me keep my voice in shape. I'd love to hear some song samples when you get a chance. You can post them in the Hotseat for folks to hear and comment. Cheers, Joe J Thomas Joe J. Thomas Acting Portfolio Quote:

Sue,
Welcome to the forum! It's awesome that you have a studio to work in. I can't wait to hear your demo! I'm also a composer and musician. I'm balancing that and VO, seeing which one's going to make me rich and famous first. I'm not holding my breath. :) I'd love to hear some of your husband's work sometime. Does he work with a particular style or genre? Anyway, welcome again! ~Alan |

Thank you for the welcome, Alan. We are in the process of putting together another demo reel of his work. He is a lead guitarist. He used to play with major bands throughout the world as well as a lot of studio work. He was part-owner of an analog studio in Houston where he was recording some major bands back before ADAT.
I never know what style or genre he is going to write but every day is something new and different. He loves country and will take his chorus of guitars and add a pedal steel and a dobro to the mix. One even has a train that is perfectly sync'd with the music. He has a MIDI controller on his tele so he will do an orchestral piece with the violins, double bass, brass, woodwinds, add timpani and a harp for a delicious mixture of morsels. He loves acoustic guitars and will do a beautiful 12-string solo along the line of flamenco. Right now he is setting up some hard rock sounds. He did an amazing piece using his Ibanez that sounds exactly like a funny car at the drag races. That one is for NHRA. Having Pro Tools HD has helped us achieve productions that are heads and shoulders above anything we hear commercially. Sorry about the soap box but he is an incredible artist with such an ear for music and engineering that it never ceases to amaze me. Sue |

Ahhh, the days of analog. I miss 'em sometimes. All this digital stuff makes my brain squishy if I think about it too much. :) He sounds like me; he just loves music, period. It sounds like he plays everything, instrument-wise. I envy that! Country is my favorite and what I'm writing right now, although I also do acoustic piano pieces that I've been told are very similar to the style and sound of Jim Brickman. Can't wait to hear that demo. :)

Welcome, Sue! Sounds like a really wonderful studio you have going there (and a very talented husband!)! I'll look forward to hearing your demos when you have them available. Definitely sounds like you have a sweet place in which to make them! :)
Wow! It's really wonderful to hear from all the other musicians around here - and see how many of us decided to head into VOs. Funny how that seems to work ... (I'm a singer and songwriter myself ... though the songwriting end of things has taken a pretty bad header over the last few years - mainly due to maintaining a web resource about the subject. :) )All the best, --Jodi

Thank you for the welcome, Jodi.
I am in awe of all of you. A lot of you are my "rabbits" that I am using as a goal for myself. I have been challenging myself to come up with new voices and characters. It is fun to get an idea and then find the right music in our library and record the VO. I owned and operated a publishing company for 13 years before my health failed and I was no longer able to continue. I love to write and it is really my passion. Maybe a second occupation within the industry could be copy writing. I have one radio VO out there that is now playing in 50 cities nationwide every Saturday and Sunday. I have some friends who live outside of Toronto. If you are interested in meeting or talking to them, let me know. They are not in VO or music at all. He works in hospice and is an Ojibwa linguist. He and his wife have a traditional native home and participate in native ceremony. I have an Ojibwa, Menominee & Winnebago ancestral background. They are good people. Thank you again for the warm welcome. Sue |
