Default Another Newbie

Hi All! I've been lurking around for the last couple of weeks, reading threads, enjoying your sage advice and being grateful that the "Hot Seat" is a volunteer opportunity and not required : ) Will save that ride for much later when I am far more experienced. Lots to learn from here, what to do as well as learning from those mistakes that someone else has graciously paid for. Thanks for having me, I hope to contribute at some level and look forward to sitting quietly in the corner til something useful strikes me.

Thanks!

Gemma

Welcome aboard.

One can learn a lot form other peoples mistakes, but you learn more when you make your own.

Welcome welcome welcome!

I know how you feel about the hot seat, but really the sooner you put your voice out there the sooner you can improve. I remember the first one I did was horrific and very embarrassing for me to do, but I just copied some of the leads and reads sections and did my best. The guys and gals knew I was just starting and gave me "meat convenient." They told me how to watch plosives and how to dampen the background noise (that was my big hurdle to begin with). Soon though I had a few reads I was proud of and it provided me a lot of information that I would have never learned.

I, as most here, started out (and am still not too far above) poor and couldn't afford to travel to the workshops and seminars. By letting these great folks hear me, I was able to learn a lot just like I had taken the workshops. Now I can afford more of the workshops and such, but it always amazes me how much of it is discussed in these forums and what a blessing it is to have made the friends I have through them.

That is another thing, these friends are great friends. They truly care and look for ways to really help you. Now don't think every bit of information is going to be honey sweet. There will be times that it is bitter to hear, but once you accept it and really learn it will become the best dish you have partaken of.

Anyway, my name is Clinton and if you ever want a listening ear or a friendly chat hit me up.

Hear ya later.

Nice to meet you, Gemma.

You can always start slow, and just post a little bit in the current "Now Hear This" thread over in "Leads and Reads"...

Hope to hear more,
Joe

Hi Gemma,

I agree with Clinton, one of the best ways to learn is just to get out there and take the plunge as opposed to testing the waters with your toes. Obviously you should not post something until you feel comfortable, however it is a great way to get some reaction and learn what are some of the things you need to work on. And let me just reiterate what Clinton said, these are great people here who are going to be very honest and never mean spirited or condescending. The goal is for all of us to learn and improve, and that is what you will find here. Welcome!

Joseph

Thanks to all of your for the encouragement. I can tell from all threads around here that the support is very sincere and very real support (as opposed to gentle lip service or mean spirited comments). It's an pleasure to get to know y'all. Thanks again!

Welcome Gemma! I am also just starting the VO journey, and have found the folks here really genuine and wonderful. Are you going on the voicelympics cruise? If you can swing it you will learn alot from some of the top folks in the industry. I will be there, learning. My husband will be there, drinking. LOL!

Welcome aboard!
