Howdy! I'm Connor, and I hail from the booming metropolis of College Station, Texas. I'm currently looking into joining the ranks of all you fine folks doing VO work. At present, I'm the marketing director for the campus rec program at Texas A&M University.
I've been thinking about VO for more than 10 years now! I figure it's about time to get my buhoonkus moving and do something! My background is in TV -- both in front of and behind the camera. My first gig was as a freelance producer for Home Shopping Network, then I moved on to news and weather in NorCal. After I while I moved to "the dark side" -- better known to those in TV and radio as a job with a salary that pays an hourly rate in the double digits, LOL! Anyhoo, it's nice to meet you all. I will be lurking, reading, and trying to figure out what to do next! Oh, BTW, my name is Connor, but I'm female..... Is that a problem on a demo? I really REALLY hate "Connie"... but wonder if for clarity I should use that professionally once I'm ready to get a demo and market myself. Any input on that one? Thanks! Connor ![]() |

Howdy, Cowgirl!
I am a native Detroiter who briefly lived in Houston before fleeing back home. It's just waaaaaaay too hot for my buhoonkus down there! Do I get extra points because I know what the "A&M" stand for? LOL! VO is fun, but just starting out can be a little tough. Network, network, network and let people know what you're up to. There can never be too many people knowing you've hung up your shingle. As for the name thing, I'd go with whatever makes you comfortable. I've had several on-air jobs over the years and have used variations of my real name as well as stage names. Have fun and stay in touch!

Hi Connor - Welcome!
Nah... keep your name. It's unique. Besides, they'll know you're a woman when they listen - uh - won't they? BTW, I lived in Big-D for about 10 years before coming to L.A. Enjoy the forum, Joe J Thomas www.JoeActor.com www.SoundsGoodToYou.com |

Hi Connor.
My son's best friend is named Connor but... um.... he's a he, of course. ![]() I grew up in Houston until we moved to New Orleans when I was 16. That was hundreds of years ago. As far as the name, if you're worried about it being an issue, just place a "Ms." in front of it.

Thanks for the warm welcomes, all.
I'm looking into coaches right now, and would love to hear your referrals for Houston area coaches. I'm also seriously considering the VoiceLympics cruise in September... Connor :) |

Howdy Connor!
Whoop! Holly Franklin here, class of '95! It's sooooo great to have a fellow Ag on the forum. We gotta keep these dodo's in line. Oh, did I say that out loud? oops! I love your name. It will stand out. Usually on agency websites, the talent is listed according to male/female. So I don't see how it could be a problem. And maybe your marketing materials could have a feminine flair to them. I'm going on the cruise. You could get coaching long distance via phone even if there's no one in Houston. Let me know if you need suggestions. Gig 'em! Holly

Holly -- thanks for the welcome! Remember the big Rec Center that you paid for during your years at A&M.... the one you barely got to use? That's where I work. I'm the marketing director over here.
I'm hoping to go on the cruise as well.... I need to figure out how to swing the time off.... I only get 2 weeks of vacation, and I normally take off about 4-5 weeks a year! My hubby's a professor in the business school, and we tend to travel a lot (my boss's secretary gets a little funny about me taking so much unpaid leave!!!!) BTW, I really LOVE your voice. It truly is unique. take care (and gig 'em!), Connor :) |
