Greetings and salutations from the newest newb on the block.
I have no experience with VO, or radio, or acting. The closest thing I've done is to roleplay some old-skool dice-and-paper D+D. Wet behind the ears? You bet. ...but I'm not delusional. I know I've got a huge mountain of work ahead of me. I am no stranger to hard work. I've been a cook and a chef for the last twenty years, and paid my own way through a BA in philosophy and culinary school. I do the things I have a passion for. My goal with voice acting is to do animation and videogames. I live close to Vancouver, and there is a sizeable market for anime dubbing (or so I've been led to believe), and EA games has their base there, and film imports from the US, etc. We'll see. Anybody here from Van? Let's network. Right now I'm looking into doing some acting classes, maybe an improv group or community theatre. Skill-building. I'm reading the forums, researching, cautiously dipping my toe into the warm goo of VO. I've bought myself an MBox Mini, a sexy Shure Unidyne mic, and I've got mad computer skilz, so home production (or practice, at the very least) is where I'm at. So, yeah. Good to be here.

Hey Dylan - Welcome!
Wow, if that's your picture, you ARE new to the biz!!! Sounds like you've got a realistic outlook and some solid goals. The acting and improv will serve you well, that's for certain. Take a peek around - lots of questions have been posted and answered. And if you can't find it, feel free to ask. Lot's of helpful folks around here ;-) I'm an olde schoole AD+D person myself. Haven't played in decades (sheesh!). Just this week I found my old books in the garage - wonder if they're worth $$$ on e-bay? Anywho, nice to meet you, and I hope we hear lots more from you on the forums. Joe J Thomas www.JoeActor.com |

Thanks for the welcome, Joe. That's my son, Liam. He's a lot better looking than I am.
I'll be stumbling my way through the threads for a while before I start beaking off - research, research, and more research. I've already got some useful tips from some of the members here on another, more-or-less savvy forum that I joined yesterday. Let's roll up a character or two and go storm Lolth's lair sometime...sigh, if I only had the time...

Hi there, Dylan. Another fellow gamer here. I always made the games fun for my players by doing voices and bad impressions. Heck, in one campaign I had goblins sounding like gangsters, Don Corleone as the goblin leader, Thurston Howell III as the lord mayor of the town under siege by the baddies, and Sean Connery as an ex-mercenary turned town blacksmith. They had a grand ol' time. ![]() Joe's right. Have a look around. Lots of great info to soak up. I know I'm doing a lot of that right now. Take care and see you around the boards. |

Welcome to the boards b3ar. Glad to have read your story. Your continuing story would make a great addition to my Voice-Over Journey podcast. If you would be so kind, I would love to include you telling your story. You could send an mp3 recording of your story to Wayne@WayneLHenderson.com , or just call and leave a voice-mail at the show's listener line at (206) 350-4610.
Just a thought. Together, here on the boards, and perhaps on the podcast, we can all arrive at a nice voice-over career. Wayne VoiceOverJourney.Libsyn.com

Hi Dylan!
The last video game I played was "pong" and I don't think there are any animated voices on that game. <g> Unless...someone did the "beep..beep" sound! I did voice two animated characters in the UK because I could impersonate the guy that did the original characters. Good luck with your career. Can you imagine your kid's face if he one day plays a game with your voice on it?

Welcome, Dylan. :) I'm fairly new to VO myself, but just took my first workshop with Debbie Monro over the weekend here in Toronto. WOW, is all I have to say. My head is *swimming* with all that info. If you're near Vancouver, look her up. She'll definitely be a huge help when it comes to character voices and to sounding real with your copy. She's quite the dynamo, too!
I'm also a D&D player from way back - though I still play. Just about every Saturday, our group gets together (there's 9 of us when there's a full roster. I'm the only woman.). We're going to "World D&D Day" on Saturday or this week to try out playing the new 4th Edition ... but I'm not holding out much hopes that it'll be more than a glorified miniatures game. Though I guess ANY game can be a role playing game if you use enough voices. ![]() Anyway, best of luck to you! Hope to see more of you around here. :)
