Hi All!
I've been spending the last year or so researching and dabbling in the business. I've got a degree in Communication from App State in NC. I've been in and out of broadcasting for the past 10 years or so - back in now ![]() I've got a little studio in my home. I've been auditioning here and there on some of the large v/o .coms - not getting much response there. Anyone else getting work from those spots? I've got a demo up on the critique me boards. I've seen some other broadcasters around. Anyone got advice on overcoming "announcer-y"?? Be gentle. Jamee

Hey Jamee - welcome!
As for auditions on-line, it's a numbers game fer-sher. If you've only done a couple auditions, I wouldn't expect to land anything yet. I think I went thru a couple hundred before getting one. Sometimes it is how early you post your audition (esp on v123). Keep at it and I'm sure you'll land one. Tell us a bit more about your experience and goals. It's easier to suggest a direction that way. Have you done Theatre or Improv? Solid acting skills can overcome some of that "announcer" syndrome. You may also try thinking about who you are portraying, and who you're speaking to (one specific person). Check out Bob Bergan's web site - he's got a great guide for starting VO's... here's a direct link: Bob Bergen Official Web Site: FAQ (thanks Bob!) Glad you found us - hope to hear more, Joe J Thomas www.JoeActor.com |

Jamee,
Welcome to the board! Here's some advice from someone who's been in radio a long time...In fact when I was a graduate assistant working on my masters, I would give my beginning announcing students this same advice...Take the headphones off and stop listening to your voice! So many of us push our voice when the headphones are on and it gives you a announcery sound...Also find a picture of someone you know and like (that's the important part) and place it somewhere near your mic where you can see it...anytime you talk into the mic, talk to that person! When you talk to someone you care about, your voice becomes more intimate and conversational! This is just advice, so take it for what it's worth (usually less than a tank of gas these days, but still...)! ct
