AEA Ribbon Microphone, Customer Service!
Extraordinary Customer Service-AEA Ribbon Microphones
I wanted to share my experience with AEA (Audio Engineering Associates) who you may be familiar with and their ribbon microphones.
I ordered the mic, a R84 VDJ last Friday via SoundPure, and despite being a custom configuration, AEA and associates had it built tested and shipped by Monday afternoon. I received it late yesterday afternoon.
This afternoon around 12:00 EST I had the opportunity to connect the microphone to my SPL preamp. No sound whatsoever. I then tried with the contained pre's in the Apogee Duet.
By 12:30 I email Doug Wessling at Soundpure and copied Renee at AEA and associates. As I use this microphone for voice overs and I have a ton of auditions waiting, I decided to go ahead and call AEA. Before I could find a pen to write down the number, Renee called me at the house and had already checked with the engineers to make certain the problem was not due to inadequate gain from my preamp (I had included the specs in my email.)
By 1:15 she had already made arrangements to send me another unit fully tested!
I am confident that the original mic left California in perfect condition, and I suspect the problem may have occurred in shipping, evidenced by the fact the UPS driver dropped the box at my back door and did not even bother to ring the bell.
This sort of customer service, unfortunately is rare. I can not say enough about the quality of the product and the service and support I have received form Renee and Wes at AEA.
If you are looking for a ribbon mic, it would be wise to consider AEA.
Wes and the gang over at AEA are the tops.
Out of curiosity, I'm wondering why you went with the R84 and not the R44?

AEA R84 DJV
Designed for voice work
The AEA R84 DJV is a variation of the award winning R84 ribbon microphone, optimized for closeup voice reproduction. The R84DJV has the gorgeous, flattering tone of the R84, but is more heavily protected from the moisture and wind blasts that can occur during vocal work. The proximity effect of the R84DJV has been adjusted for an articulate sound at close working distances. The R84DJV is perfect for studio broadcast work, voice overs, and "intimate" vocal recordings.
