    Default Recording Software...

    Hello all,
Still pretty new to the forum, but I thought I'd just jump right in and contribute! I thought it'd be nice, especially for folks just getting into VO, to do a little survey of what type of recording software your using. (There are a lot of choices out there and it may help someone decide!)
I'll start, I've been in radio for 23 years and have picked up several different editing suites over the years, currently I have SAW, Cool Edit Pro2, Adobe Audition 1.5, Samplitude, and I recently picked up ProTools M-Powered 7 for my m-audio card. I also use the Waves Diamond plug in package.
As I just got ProTools, I can't really say that it's my favorite yet, (I've only had it like 3 days) but it's pretty user friendly. I will say that the software I use more often is Adobe Audition 1.5 (I know there's updated versions out there, but using it on a daily basis at the radio station, we feel that it's the most stable version, although we'll have to check out version 3). If you're just starting out, I'd probably recommend adobe just for it's ease of use for people not familiar with audio editing. (If you can type a message on this forum and edit it, you can use adobe!)

How bout everyone else what do you use?

I use AA 2.0 at home and have the original 1.0 that I use at the radio station. I have AvDeli as my production library (which you can still get at buy out price) and I have most of the direct-x plugins that I use with AA. I have a version of SawPro but haven't used it in years, it's a back up I guess. When the work the bugs out of ProTools PC version I'll buy it too.

I have used Audacity (Mac), BIAS Peak LE (Mac), Sony ACID, Adobe Audition 2.0, Sound Forge 9.0, Mackie Tracktion (Mac & PC) and now Cubase 4.0 (Mac and PC). I picked up the full version of Cubase 4.0 for about $350.00 at B&H with an educational discount. AA is pretty cool and is a multi-tracking software, but I have found that Sound Forge is much easier with recording than the others. The only issue with SF is that it is not multi-tracking.

    That's funny.
I find Adobe Audition much more difficult to use than this forum!
Pro Tools wasn't the easiest at first either, but I've been using it for about five years, so I use it.

I was making some pretty cool stuff on Audicy (yes, Audicy) from Orban... until they made me learn Pro Tools. That was on PC and a few years ago. Now I'm using on a Mac & it's even better! All the drag-n-drop features... plug-ins...

I'm no Yohankanamata Huinso, but ask me anything about the program any time-- it's my job. I learned quickly that ProTools mastery is all about collecting those little tips.

    Here's one:

To highlight everything after your cursor, hit control+shift+return. (PC)
    Mac users hold option+shift+return.

    Another:

A quick-bounce for a one-track segment of audio can be done with control+shift+k (pc), Mac is apple+shift+k.

    Anyhoo...

I'm currently using Sony Acid Pro 6.0 and it seems to be a very solid program. I looked at ProTools, Audition, and other DAW's but, in the end, Acid was the best fit for my needs (I'm also a musician/composer/arranger), current studio setup, and budget.

    Hi Chuck,

I use SoundForge, with Acid when I need multi-track.

Also a big fan of Magix Audio Cleaning Lab (cheap and cheerful!)

... and of course a bit of Audacity on my mobile setup for variety.

Great tips PierceVoice! I'm sure I'll be hitting you up for more as I continue to learn ProTools!

Chadd... a fellow former Audicy user? I was on that beast for 10 years. Right now, Audition 1.5 is what I use. Holy cow what a culture shock giong from Audicy to AA. Took me about a YEAR to get used to Audition but I fly on the sucker now.

Audicy was by far the fastest, easiest digital system EVER. In today's environment of a myriad of file types and CD ripping, etc... it's a dinosaur. You have to "real time" everything in/out of it.
