Cooked down: yes, it could easily be the mp3-encoders being the source of the difference. Some editors have the Fraunhofer encoder built in, some have the LAME, which is not as "lame" as the name says, and some may have others. I have Franhofer and LAME, and prefer LAME.

Watch out for the variables. Try comparing with NO plug-in's, NO presets, etc. on either side.

Again, I state that a one is a one and a zero is a zero. Any difference in audio quality has to be caused by out-of-box analog factors or in-box software diffenences (ie: plug-ins or processing.)

There is simply no way on God's earth a software program can make up a different one or zero than any other program. There is only one "one" and only one "zero."

In as much as 0 seem to be important here consider this little bit of bio on "0" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/0_(number)

Colin my friend I will return with a thesis on how algorithms affect the performance of one program vs. another. Paul get you stuff together too. To have an opinion is one this, to be able to back it up is another story.

Colin you may be right "as you know it to be" I may be wrong. A clear, concise and rational examination is call for here.

There are many things that affect the digital recording of audio. Many of these things we agree on. Until next we pontificate. Take care all.

As a member of the Audio Engineering Society AES, I have access to their library of technical document at a discounted rate pre document.

There are hundreds if not thousands of documents available so to find the definitive one on algorithms is a bit of a challenge.

I have found a technical document for one manufacture that speak clearly to algorithms and their place in digital recording and play back. “A Digital Signal Processing Algorithm for Digital Audio Disk Recording” is the title and I will be digesting it and sharing exerpts from it to support my understanding that “Computer Algorithms are essential for recording and playback”. Yes 1’s are 1’s and 0’s are 0’s but the algorithm determines how the values are stored.

I have mine Paul are you getting yours ready, lets see if we can shed new light on this discussion.

Ed, I'm covered up in work this week (making ones and zeros) but will look when I get a chance. It's a little like looking for documentation that the blade if the part of the lawnmower that does the cutting, but I'll look!

Thanks for the sources you bring. I appreciated your post on the Savoa standards.

Hey Trugs, it will take you about 8-9 hours to drive from NY to Toronto. You have over 800 kms to drive, but it can be done.
