    Default Soundcraft Mixer

Anybody have any experience with the Soundcraft compact 4 mixer? Looking to expand my small home studio beyond my small computer interface to allow for more ins and outs for future phone patch and monitoring abilities. Pros or cons or another reccomendation?

I can't really recommend that mixer, you'll need and want the functionality of a full board.
Try looking at the M4 or the EPM6.

It may be because there are no master faders for the Aux Sends- it could be a deal breaker if you are running a lot of side chain effects. But it should be fine for what we do.

I know it's seems pricy, but the M is a better board.

I came across this it might be of some help.
Soundcraft M Series or Allen & Heath MixWizard (or other)? - Home Recording

As Greg pointed out in another thread, Allen&Heath are fine mixers too.

What do you think about this. It seems to cover all of my needs and phone patch options:

It's not a bad little mixer, but I don't think you will be very happy with it in the long run. Some guys use it for running
headphones and monitors on locations. It will do in a pinch, but you would be better off with the EMP, or as I've always said
the M Series is really good.

It might be better to save up and get a really good board, than to get something you can't get your money back out of it
when you want to upgrade again.

Check out eBay, there are some good deals there, that's where I picked up my board.

Found a used Mackie CFX12, asking $250. Any good?

What I know of Mackie, I don't particularly care for, you would need to ask someone else.
Not many reviews on this model by any one I can rely on, and what consumer revies I've found
they range from karaoke DJ's to twits that couldn't review a pimple on a cows butt. Next!

Though I have heard good things about Onyx models, Greg mention he liked Onyx in another thread a few days ago.

The Onyx preamps aren't bad. Nothing that takes your breath away, but they're very clean, which at the time they were introduced to the market was a bit of a rarity for a mixer at that price point.

As an all-in-one board, you'll be better off looking at Soundcraft or Allen & Heath I think. They're designed for recording, whereas the Onyx mixers were designed more for live sound. However, if you're using a patchbay already, the Onyx mixers make a very nice way to deal with phone patch, ISDN, and studio monitors.

I only have one in my project room, and I like it, but I also recognize it for what it is - good preamps for VO, and usable if you know your way around a board, but limited compared to other mixers designed for recording.
