This is a review of ”Billion $ Read- How to Make Money Reading and Recording Books” by Pat Fraley, with Audie Award Nominee, Hillary Huber.
Pat Fraley & Hillary Huber offer an astonishing amount of information in this content-packed 2 CD set. The encouraging thing Fraley & Huber tell us, “Because there are so many market genres; mystery, history, suspense, motivational, fiction, humor, drama, classics, business, management, etc., there is the right book for you. One of the most important points to remember when reading an audio book, is to not react to what you read. Let the listener do that Infuse your voice into the character, and allow the narrator to be a character. Simply think and feel the text as you read it. Frank Muller, a highly respected audio book narrator says, ”Be yourself, use your voice and try to find the truth of the author’s intent.”. Other topics addressed include, workbook exercises, reading aloud skills, tempo, volume, energy, diction, mouth works, and pitch (throat placement), preparation (research), resources, directions for submitting yourself to an audio book publisher, and demo structure. On a scale of 1-5 stars, this CD with its accompanying workbook gets a 5, and I would consider it essential for anyone wishing to pursue audio book recording. |

I was fortunate enough to get to review Pat Fraley’s “Billion $ Read: How to Make Money Reading & Recording Books”. Pat and his business partner and fellow teacher Hillary Huber give instruction and insight into the world of audio books. The two CDs and workbook cover the nuts and bolts of the business, including preparing demos, marketing, research and recording, as well as solid techniques to understand the nuances of reading audio books, which Fraley refers to as the “Shakespeare of voice over”, since it is arguably the most challenging type of voice work. Fraley and Huber demonstrate exercises to help with tempo, volume, energy and diction, as well as character separation and expressiveness.
Pat and Hillary also give solid advice on the business side of the audio book business with advice on networking, bidding on books, pitching audio books to the publisher, and resources to use in getting work as a reader. While an introduction to the business of audio books, I found plenty of info in this that I’ll be going back to again and again. I’ve picked up techniques that have already made improvements in my voiceovers. I can’t recommend this enough. If you’re interested in reading audio books, don’t learn from your mistakes – learn from Pat’s and start out ahead of the game. |

Hello all,
I've just finished listening to Patrick Fraley's "Billion $ Read" audio course. Pat and his Audie nominated co-host, Hillary Huber, approach the topic of audio books in an entertaining and informative way. They cover a lot of ground, but still seem to be having a good time in the booth. The fun is contagious and kept my interest throughout the entire 2 hours. The information given in the 2 hours of "Billion $ Read" audio is echoed and enhanced by the included workbook. It helps cut down the need to take notes while listening, and provides an easy reference for some of the more complex topics. I found the in-depth nature of the course to be an invaluable introduction to the world of audio books and recording. The topics span everything from how to read, to contacting publishers, to how much to charge. It is all presented in a straight forward order, with a plethora of examples, exercises, and sample reads. Although I have yet to record an audio book myself, I feel that after listening to Billion Dollar Read I have all the information necessary to hit the ground running. I really appreciate the amount of thought, experience and effort that went into creating this 2 cd set and workbook. "Billion $ Read" is well worth the price of admission. I imagine a class that handles the topic of audio books this well, would cost much, much more. Kudos to Pat and Hillary on a fantastic course. It should be of great help to anyone interested in breaking into the lucrative world of audio books. I'd consider it "recommended listening" on the topic. Now... I'm off to find a book to record ;-), Joe J Thomas www.JoeActor.com |

Pat Fraley the man of over 4,000 cartoon voices has created a new book and 2 CD System titled “The Billion $ Read” for those of us who wish to or are thinking about the audio book market.
This is my first experience with any of Pat’s products and if this is anything like what has offered before boy, have I missed out. Pat has the program set up into 2 segments on 2 CD’s- one for learning to do audio books and the techniques for performance and the other on how to get a job doing audio books. The audio book market is a growing field and there is room for voice actors of all levels- though, the competition is great. The biggest market is for Women. As a good number of the books on the market are targeted towards that audience He has done a fantastic job with this program –the techniques he offers for the audio books can be transferred to non-book audio work. His knowledge and experience is vast and it shows, as he pulls the listener in, and creates a one on one training session. It doesn’t get better than that folks. Everything is covered from how to read to how to land a job- (the later is not guaranteed). This is a fantastic product—I I’d give it three thumbs up if I could, but I only have 2 thumbs. |
