I just picked this new 5-CD set up over the holidays and I must say it is a must have for any VO person and especially those who are looking to take their career to the next level. I bought Julie's first version of this back in the mid 90's and the revised version in '01. I've put her principles into practice before and they have always paid off for me. This new version is totally different from the first two but in a very good way because it's relevent to todays technology. Since the internet has totally changed the way we do business in this field, it's good that there is an up-to-date resource that newbies and seasoned pros alike can reference for new ideas, current info or just a refesher on things we may already know but just never think about or never want to take the time to put in to place. I know for me this is the case alot. This CD set is about marketing in VO...not VO technique or delivery. I especially liked the interviews with various industry experts like Kristine Oller on being organized and following through on tasks and plans to grow your business with good career strategy....and Rob Sciglimpaglia talking about legal and liability issues if you do VO....these are the types of things VO people need to be aware of and reminded of often to help grow and protect their business. It really is a business and if you're serious about it you have to treat it that way.
The other interviews are awesome too. Gabby from Voice Hunter gives insight on Radio Imaging and Stephanie Ciccarelli from Voices.com gives really good info on search engine optimization and what to do to get the most out of online services when auditioning. If youre clueless about mics and processors and setting up a home studio and especially on a small budget there is some very good info on that too....and also on getting your website designed, branding and the biz in general. It's about 5 hours of really solid VO ideas and insight. I have heard several good CD workshops/seminars/instructional lessons from some pretty good national VO people whos resumes speak for themselves, but Julie's is by far the best and most specific to VO marketing. I usually play this in my car while driving...over and over and over and over and over....because you can never learn too much and you can never hear valuable info like this too many times. Each time I listen I pick up a new idea about what I can do to make my business, marketing or presentation better. I would encourage you if you're serious about your VO career then this is something that needs to be in your CD player on a daily basis. Thanks! Glenn Moore |
