july seems like as good a month as any to take a walk down the runway with no training, a dodgy mic, and plenty of people with opinions.....

I don't post many demos here anymore, but every once in a while I get a lead that just feels so good. This was one from V123. They wanted a 'storyteller'.

Kudos for jumping in the pool! I like your tone and pacing. Your recording level is a bit low, so you may want to up the volume on your mike a tad. I would like to hear more emotion, and a connection between you and the person you're speaking to. Try to think of a specific person, and really talk to them. It takes a lot of practice to sound natural, but keep at it. You've got a good base to work from. Do you have any acting or improv experience? Or singing? I find all of these to be a great help when it comes to reading copy... Cheers, Joe J Thomas Joe J. Thomas Acting Portfolio SoundsGoodToYou.com - Joe J Thomas - Voice Actor |

![]() Now tell the story, bring it to life. Try this. Think of a friend that would like this story. Write there name at the top of the page, next to the copy. Now, figure out who you are, for now you can be you, but let's also call you a Bobby Fischer junky, and you found this story about Bobby and you want to share this story with your friend who is equally a Bobby junky. Now think of the friend and say their name before you start. You can even say something like, " Hey (fill in the name)! Have you heard this story about Bobby??" Then you can start the read. If you have apicture of them that you can look at; even better. Just talk to your friend. Good Luck!! |

Nicely put! A passion for the story (without subtracting by stealing the show with TOO much emotion) is necessary to make a viewer/listener as interested as the person who deemed this story marketable. After all, you wouldn't be commissioned to spread this tale was it not worth spreading to someone, right? As I've learned, form is important, but shouldn't crush the humanity.
Here's an example of something I would have once thought TOO loose, but am now hoping lands the gig-- it's a demonstration of a geeky PC product. Since I'm talking to the listener & not narrating, it's a bit different... but this way I get to add my 2cents to the pile of amazing insights while also totally getting to post audio I'm proud of (you get input, my ego gets fed... we all win!). ![]() |
