Not really. Of course you need a to understand life's emotions and scenarios. But when at the microphone it's not about were, or who you are in life; it's Who, What, When, Where, your character is in the scene.

You would not say, "I love you" to someone in a crowed room of people the same way as you would in the bedroom, anymore then you would say "I love you" the same way to your Wife as you would to your Mother.

But as the actor whether you are playing a dog or yourself you still need to put yourself into the imaginary scene you create in your mind, so that you can play within it and react to it.

Even if it's "2.9% financing" fodder, you still need make choices - that's acting. If, you can make it believable.

Eddie Carroll said, "You don't own the character -it's not yours- you're only, the caretaker of it."

Hmmm...

I was about to declare this thread WAY ...

But somehow J.S. tied it all back together

Ok, kids - play nice.

Some folks make an entire living off of one character, others do so many they don't know what their real voice sounds like any more.

Whatever camp you're in (or somewhere in between), you still need a good demo, and connections, and business sense, and a tonne (metric) of other stuff to make it.

'nuff said.

Let's stay on topic here, or create a new thread to hash out the "acting / not acting" conversations...

(you could even post a poll ;-),

Hey Jon, I was waiting for JS to chime in also. I would have to agree, after working in Hollywood for a number of years, that talent is a requirement, but there are a ton of people with talent who never make it. Knowing the right people or being at the right place at the right time with talent, pricessless!
