Default Christian Radio Imaging

I'm the first to admit that I don't know much about the prevalent styles in the format, so your advice is greatly valued. Seems like a good market for a "friendly" guy-next-door approach. Since I wrote all this, there's a risk of going too stereotype--I hope you'll not be offended if I've made errors.

Best Wishes for a Wonderful Holiday Wkend!

Chadd,

In my opinion, you knock everything you do out of the park. This included. The only thing I would say is a touch more variety.

I like it a lot, Chadd, and I give you credit for posting it so we can listen to it.

Have an egg-cellent weekend!

I guess it's okay, Chadd. Sounds a bit 'safe' to me.
I currently work in Christian radio and have worked in it off and on since 1998.

Here's one I'm still trying to convince our GM to put on the air.

I could inject a large F++++++++K! in the middle somewhere, but I'm not sure it will be taken as you and I see it.

Thing is, I spent a previous life in aggro, naughty, dangerously irreverent rock radio where sacrificing virgins is cool-- hence the over-compensation. Any suggestions as to a new addition? Maybe something more Alt. sounding?

Glad you all are piping up & in!

Scott,

I reckon your suggested promo would go down a treat in South Alabama!

At least most of the sermons I heard as a kid had a similar theme (if not a similar delivery).

:)

Glad there are some people of faith out there with a sense of humor!

Chadd,

Perhaps a newbie question, but how exactly do you get all those "shifts" in your demo above?

I mean the phase shift, the different "depth" of sound, and the vaguely like a telephone, but not that thin sounding sound?

I'd really like to add a greater variety of effects to my demos (only where required, of course).

Thanks,

Will

Will,
I spend most my day as apost-producer, specializing in all those cool vocal effects. All my work is produced in a suped-up ProTools system using a pretty wild collage of plug-ins on the voice, and a massive stash of "production parts" for the background.

There are a few fx you can achieve pretty easily with just about any set up.
  • That "telephone" sound is a specific equalizer tuning that favors the upper-middle & low-high frequencies (the key here is to pull back on the other frequencies as opposed to just adding MORE of the "phone-sounding" parts I just described).
  • There is a "doubling" effect that places the left & right tracks just a hair apart from one another to play more upon the stereo sound.
  • I also add a slight reverb to my vocals (easily OVERdone), and have a few other expensive tricks I play with.

All this junk sounds cool to audio geeks, but I've had to remind myself that is doesn't make me a more talented voice actor. It's too easy for us to get caught up in gear and fx (guilty)-- but unless you're out to show off your production skills for a gig, it's important to differentiate those interests as a "hobby" when you're in voice-over mode. Unless it's radio imaging time. THEN we can play a bit more :)

GOOD NEWS! I'm working on more edgy Good News prod & will have it up shortly!

Hi, Chadd,

Thanks for the pointers. I'm wanting to try a few imaging spots and your advice above is invaluable.

And I meant to say before, I really liked your delivery on this piece. You and Scott have a really natural, warm, honest style that I would love to master.

Hopefully, little by little, I'm getting there - finding my voice rather than my "VO voice".

I look forward to hearing your next postings. I always save new reads I like as study pieces. :)

Take care,

Will

It's.... HERE! And this process is forcing me to learn, which I LOVE.
This is take 2, much of it's changed. Closer? Further?

Thanks for the kind words, Will-- best wishes!!
