It took a month and a half, and it's only 50 bucks, but who cares. This makes me feel good. Helps get me out of my depression.
It's an online video for The National Guard done by college students. The only thing that gets me, is that they are asking me to fill out a w-9 form. (taxes) and I believe it asks for my ssn on that form. so...has anyone had to fill out a w-9 for a job when it came to any of the online jobs? It makes me a little suspicious. I could just be paranoid though. |

I provide W-9s to my clients all the time, Kenneth, but in this case I WOULD be a bit suspicious. First of all, they're students, not a business. Secondly, they don't NEED a W-9 unless they pay you more than $500/year. The first thing I'd do is check with V123 and see if they've verified the legitimacy of these people. Before sending your SSN, I'd also talk to them (your client) in person, get a physical address and probably send them the work and the invoice and see if they really DO need it.
It may be, and hopefully IS, legit. But like I said, in this particular case tread carefully. And congrats on the gig man! I hope this is just the first of many!

Kudos!
I agree with Scott on the W-9... no real need for it here. I'd ask them about it. Cheers, Joe J Thomas Joe J. Thomas Acting Portfolio |

Kenneth - First off, congrats on your first V123 gig. Considering that you have only been there for a month and half, that is pretty impressive.
From my understanding, the W9 thing is normal and is used to keep the client legit with the tax man. One thing to consider, are you getting paid by an individual or by the school? My guess it is from the school which would explain the W9. You might want to talk to a Tax pro to get the full details as to when this is required though. Keep up the great work.

... and be sure to post the finished audio piece so we can hear it, too!

Okay, even more so then, Kenneth... if they're a legit company (and apparently they are) why do they need a W-9 for anything less than $500?
And if they're legit, why such a low rate? At any rate (no pun intended) GL with this and I hope it leads to more for you!

If the university is reimbursing the students for production costs, then it's conceivable that their requirements are to obtain a W-9. It may be a general requirement to simply prove work-for-hire as opposed to employee status or to have a standard form that provides appropriate contact and legal tax reporting. Also, vendors may perform multiple works-for-hire in a tax year that would send income over the minimum for mandatory reporting. Many accounting systems, in particular government and university are designed to work from W-9 reporting. It is also voluntary to report earnings under $600 and many hiring bodies will report and issue tax forms for any amount. Earnings of any amount are taxable whether reported or not
