Voice Over Contest To Be In The Next Spider-Man Game

The weekend of April 18th through the 20th brings the NY Comic-Con to the mean streets of Gotham City. That is if you want to call the streets around the Jacob Javits Center mean. The annual comic book convention brings together the triumvirate of geek culture with comic, movie and video games coming together in booth and panel form for the paying public.
If you happen to be going to the convention or just in the New York area and have some time and money to blow you may want to head over to the Activision booth (booth number 1048) as they have an interesting contest lined-up for their next Spider-Man game. For the three days they are there at the Javits Center they will be recording grunts, screams and your best irritated cabbie voice acting for the newest Marvel comic video game.
This may not be the most exciting proposition for the experienced professional voice over artist, but if you know someone who’s been thinking about getting into the industry this may be a fun starting point for them.

Sweet!

The Activision folks are top-notch, so if you're near the NYC area, GO! and have some fun with it.

Wish I could make it there...
(then I could make it anywhere...)

Activision LOVEs doing stuff like this. They did the same thing for Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, and I believe they not only found a bunch of side characters, they ended up finding the voices of Jean Grey and Bruce Banner through one of these contests.
I got really into that game when Trev Broudy was cast as Captain America. Woot!

Yes indeedly-doodly! I voiced "Namor" in that game (via contest) - also got Taft-Hartley into SAG on it, so big bonus there...

Thanks Chuck ;-)

It was a lot of fun, and great for my resume to boot.
I've got it for the PC, but was thinking of getting the Wii version too...

Further evidence that there are NO barriers to entry in this business.

Geez, Joe! Thanks for putting that song in my head. I find a minute to get back on the forum and this is what I get ... Bonnie Tyler bouncing around in my brain :-)! So here's one of the questions I remembered I wanted to ask you, and this is because it was asked of me and I didn't know how to answer: "Do you know how many separate voices you can do? Is this a normal industry question?

Hmmm... good question.

WARNING! WARNING!

I actually had a PR person tell me to post a number on my site, but I disagreed with them. I've always viewed that as a bit tacky, and maybe even a sign of an inexperienced VO. Like when you go to a community theatre production and read in the program "so-and-so has appeared in over 73 productions!" Who cares? If I know of the actor, I don't need to hear how many shows he's done. If I don't know them, this isn't going to form my opinion. Their performance will.

But I digress.

From my perspective, your demo should represent you and show your range, not display 1001 voices. Or if they're looking for something in particular, a custom demo will show if you have it... or not.

After a while, you'll start collecting tonal ranges, vocal placements, accents, speech patterns, etc... and the number of voices becomes a factor of all of those. How many? I have no idea!

Ok, true story time. I got an audition from a guy who wanted Bono's voice. I listened to some samples, laid down a custom demo, and got the job. Same thing happened with an Alec Baldwin request. Point being that I didn't know I could do either of them until the auditions came in.

Your mileage may vary, but that's how the crazy character VO world works for me ;-)
