There is some "paperwork" to be done on the part of the Producer, but keeping your union membership intact is entirely worth the effort on your part.
I Googled "turning non-union gigs into AFTRA gigs"; there are numerous resources available. Also, call your local AFTRA office and ask the question of the great, helpful, friendly people in your local. If you choose to join a union, support it wholeheartedly.
