Default Uh-oh? (An Audition Issue)

For those of you receiving leads from Voices.com, who auditioned for the WorkplaceEnglish Training spot?

Did everyone receive an e-mail similar to this?

Hi Bret [Name?] Thanks for you quote for the male voice and sample recording. I like your voice and was happy with the production quality of the sample, but we're looking for one person to handle the whole project including post production. You'd need to have access to a female voice who can do two voices. Since part of the podcast includes a dialogue script it is much easier for us if we receive the whole completed project as a single file. So could you requote for the whole project (all voices for one podcast and two news articles) if you're able to handle it. And a short audio clip of the female voice if you have one available would be appreciated. We publish 2 podcasts each month as well as other audio projects like news articles, etc. If you do a good job, we can let you have all our future audio work. Regards
If yes, I should let the big boys (read: Everyone here) handle this lead.

If not, I'm in big trouble. I don't know any industry contacts well enough to call up a partner for a dialogue read. This job alone is 2,300 split between male/female.

What should I do?

I think you have done the right thing already. Maybe there is female voice in the forums that is willing to voice the spot with you. If that does not work, do a search in your area and see if there are any local female VO folks that are willing to help and share the spot with your. Call local radio stations or studios and see if anyone can help you out with the post production. I'm sure there is a female voice and an engineer that would love to help you out.

Good luck,

Jon

Good for you to get a response!

I saw that one job, but don't recall anything about any mention of needing production management and casting to be done by the talent. I do remember that the script is at least eight pages long, though (I'm assuming by "2,300", you're talking word count, right?).

I also don't recall seeing anything about handling the post production. However, I was tempted to tell them that I would be happy to recruit the female voices, knowing that there are so many excellent ones available among the membership of this forum.

Do you have production facilities?
I'd be one of your voices...but I don't really do voices, so I can't be TWO voices. Depending on your budget... I know LOTS of female voices who will do it for a good rate for you. I can record myself and another female (depending on age, specs, etc.) at my studio and send to you to post produce.

Thanks Jon, Greg, Lee, and Julie.

Jon - As it turns out, there is someone here who doesn't mind giving me a hand. (Looks like I have a savior!) I may end up doing all the engineering myself.

Greg - Looks like this seeker added all the specifics after my audition was submitted. He sure does want quite a bit. For all the work, including talent and mastering, his price bracket ($100-250) is low. I've seen 2,300 words end up costing as much as $600 for talent alone.

Lee - It's interesting. This guy wants the entire podcast PLUS two news articles recorded, cut, mastered, and mixed down to a single file. It's as though he wants ME to do the entire podcast. A little unconventional.

Julie - If by "production facilities" you mean mixing and mastering software, then yes. I should be able to produce a quality mix without too much difficulty. He's not asking for atmosphere or music, at least.

Dina offered to help me out (thank you Dina!), and so far we are approaching the project cautiously. Thank you so much for the offer to help, Julie! I'm not sure how this client will respond to the re-quote and my new audition files.... we'll just have to see. If your offer is still open after we touch base with this guy, the more the merrier! Again, though, I'm not sure he'll accept the re-quote.

I don't know what I would do without you guys!

Bret

Bret, I had tried to find the lead when I responded to you earlier, but it seems I deleted it. I thought it was a $100 - $250 level job, but I wasn't sure. I'd be surprised if the seeker is really shocked by a higher re-bid for you basically doing all the work. If I remember correctly, that script was long and single-spaced.

By the way, you might want to take a peek at this site:

http://www.newenglandfilm.com/guide/...f?category=224

This particular page lists a LOT of VO folks in the New England area. You know... For future reference...

In that case, I'm glad I didn't get the job.
