In the last year I've had really good luck with payments but have had two clients who I couldn't seem to get to pay.
The first one was a small one-man production company. I finally got him to pay by asking him if I should "start going after the company that I did the VO for" (Meaning the company that had hired him to do the project) That got him to not only pay me right away but to also add an extra $100 to the payment as an "apology" and, "the company you did the work for really liked your work and has mentioned you for a second project, I hope this extra payment makes up for my unprofessional behaivior, and if I pay in advance you'll consider doing the project" The second one I'm still a bit frustrated with. They owe me $1,800. They are a company that has a ton of franchises spread around the country... and while they haven't paid me yet and were IGNORING my Emails, yesterday I asked them if I should start individually hounding each of their franchise owners for their share of my payment, and the guy said he'd "walk down to accounting on Monday and try to get my payment". We'll see. I think the key is, if you decide to play hardball you have to go after them where it may hurt... fully knowing that you will probably lose them as a client.. but you probably don't want them as a client anymore anyway!

It's situations like this where having a lawyer on retainer (or in the family) can come in handy.
To date, I've had three non-payments. Two of which I was able to get payment for simply by using a side policy I have with my insurance agent that permits me access to their lawyers for "minor civil matters" (such as threatening letters). I hate to do that, but sometimes being nice just doesn't work. The third one is a long story, but ended up with the use of other skills I have at my disposal and assisting in the arrest and prosecution of the individual. Didn't get paid, but managed to do some good out of the experience, which is just as rewarding to me.

I did some cartoon voices for an upcoming video game. As soon as I sent in my last sample I never heard from them again.
The video game came out recently and I heard my character in the introduction. Not my voice, but the character I had created, accent, inflection, tone, timing, everything. A little further in I definitely heard my voice, it was only a two word part but distinctively mine. I haven't played the rest of the game to find out if any of my other characters are in there, although I suspect they are. |

I haven't had an issue with non-payment, but there have been SLOOOOWWWW payments lol. One small company was taking a while to pay me and I found out it was because they had figured the budget wrong and it was very Mom-Pop style restaurant. I took payment in food comps. They were so happy they gave me double the amount originally agreed upon. It was a place I eat at a lot so it worked good for me. lol
