Description: I am new at recording sound files in MP3 and .wav. This project requires that the successful bidder receive a CD via regular mail, convert the three short voice-overs to MP3 and/or .wav files and then submit these files to a website (a voice-over job subscription listing website). The project will begin immediately.

Really????? This has to be someone just having a laugh

oooops... just now had to edit my response. I re-read the job description and I doubt it's a joke. It is, instead, a sad reflection of the false hope the online v/o P2P sites offer to those with absolutely no background, no technical expertise and no business being in this business. I'd be curious to see what this guy wants to pay for this type of work.

If this person doesn't know how to save a wav or mp3 file, I dread to think of the recording quality.
I knew how to do this far before I knew how to produce a decent sound.
It is sad indeed.

Laughable.

Mike's Handy Hints:

Many people don't realize that when converting a CD (Red Book), WAV, AIFF, AU formats to a digitally compressed format (mp3 and the like) that the "Uncompressed Digital Files" volume needs to be reduced about 6dB (from 0dB) before digital compression. This is to reduce clipping. The algorithms of these compressions are not an across the board reduction of file information, so often the dynamics of these uncompressed files peak when compressed to let say mp3.

There are no programs that do this automatically. So until such a program is designed, you need to make this adjustment yourself. In doing this you will get better sounding files over all.

Though this mostly happens with music files, but some people that be live louder is better, and can push there productions into unlistenable mush when converting their files to mp3.

Mike, anybody who would post the job that inspired this thread would have absolutely no idea what the hell you were talking about.

True.

So just reduce the volume before converting your files to mp3.

Ahhhh I'll remember that tip Mike. I was working on my latest Dr Who fan audio and wondered why at least one of the cast's volume were clipping my ears on mp3 playback... oh dear.
