With me, it's old radio drama and old radio production. I think it's the core of what we do.
I've noticed that some others love comic books. In the creative arena, it can be almost anything. What we love says a lot about us. What do you love?

1. My wife and kids
2. Music. Way back in my bachelor days I'd come home from work, pour a glass of wine and kick back on the couch with my headphones on for HOURS at a time listening to non-traditional music. Stuff we used to call 'space music', as well as jazz and space rock (e.g.: Pink Floyd, early Genesis, ELP, etc). I've played an instrument for most of my life and am working on my 3rd cd. I live and breathe music. 3. Acting and ANYTHING involving the theatre. I direct, but prefer being ON stage. When doing neither I help out in any way our theatre needs, such as running box office or the concessions area. 4. Movies. 5. Golf. 'cept that's a love/hate relationship! 6. Animals. Right now we ONLY have 2 dogs and 2 cats, but I shoulda been a vet.

Got no wife; got no kids; got no dog. So, here's what floats my boat,
lifted directly off my MySpace page (does anybody still go there?): Things that interest me but I don't necessarily participate in: Art, Architecture, Archaeology, Astronomy, History, Baseball, Football, Hockey, Railroads, Music. Things I actually do (to a greater or lesser degree): Computers, Food/Cooking, Golf, Radio, TV, Home Improvement, Woodworking.

Of course my wife and kids come first, was more interested in hobby type activities.
I took ten years off from voice and production to do IT work because computers were my hobby at the time. Then I realized I wasn't happy and that my passion was really voice and production so I started down a long path making voice and production my hobby. Now I'm back at it full time. I realized that voice and production was my true passion. My good friend who passed recently told me shortly before he died that the only mistake I made was turning to IT and that I belonged in VO and production. Sage words. So, I guess the point is, if you can make your life's work out of a hobby, a passion... you've really got it made. It took me a long time to learn that. When I started in IT, computers were cool. Shiny new things that only a few understood. Then they became mainstream and all hell broke loose. Working on computers now seems to me to be like working on the refrigerator. They are an appliance now. Boring tedious work that IT is. Sorry for the verbose post. So often with computer work, you're only there to handle a crisis. You're only involved when something bad is happening. That takes it's toll. With VO, you are there to make something good happen. It's much more positive. I realized in mid-life that my true passion is VO.

Not to sound self-centered or a narcissist but my number one passion, is my life. I'm the Elephant on the trampoline, willing to take a risk and do something different. I'm responsible for my happiness, my success and my failures. I learned a long time ago after many failures that no one is going to take care of Mike except Mike. Wishing, wanting, or waiting for some outside force or person to splay out in front of me a ticket to a successful ride in life was not going to happen. You only get what you pay for, and if you get short changed, raise hell and don't shop there anymore- in other words you have choices. Don't misconstrued this for being a self centered ass; friends family and associations are an interracial part of my happiness and well being. I'm just a driven person, but I always try to keep my feet on the ground.
Next my passion is -What ever it is I'm doing at the moment. What ever it is I'm doing has my full attention and dedication. My partner, family and friends The general short-list of interest, curiosities and things I could be doing at any moment: Voice Over Audio production Disney Historian Reading Mimicking and impersonating voices Writing Film Commercial artist Camera operator/special effects Photography Art: Painting, Sculpting, Drawing, Animation Music (40,000 titles on vinyl alone we won't even talk about the digital library) Electronics: building, repair, design. Toy collecting Building, making or creating something. Here's a little deck I built for a friend in Pasadena just in time for Summer (I'm also a master carpenter and builder. My grandfather was a contractor here in So Cal and a hammer was put in my hands at the early age of 8) Last edited by Mike Sommer; 06-29-2009 at 01:13 AM. |

After many years, I finally acted on my #1 passion, playing drums, and joined a band! On a whim, I auditioned for a blues/funk band and actually got the gig! www.raisingscarlet.com My first show is next week!

Cam, that's AWESOME! Congrats and if possible, post some audio of some of your stuff.
My wife has always loved percussion and started out playing the djembe, congas, etc. A few years ago I bought her a nice used TAMA drumset and she took some lessons. She was getting pretty good, but the lessons died out (I don't recall the exact reasons). She kind of quit playing, so I sold the TAMAs and bought an electronic drum kit. Like the TAMA acoustic kit, it collected dust so I finally sold it recently on ebay. Her latest interest? Learning the bass. So... you guessed it.... I bought her a bass guitar to learn. We'll see.

Thanks Scott! I'll see about taking some video at a show sometime.
I'd love to learn the bass too--something about the rythym section instruments. Weren't you playing some sort of guitar hybrid a while ago? (forgot the name) The YouTube samples sounded incredible...how's that going? |
