...just to let some of you know where people like me come from... this was a "top hour" at WQXI Atlanta circa the late 70's. The talent was aka Coyote McCloud. This is greatness on the AM dial...

Me too. Unfortunately I didn't get into the business at that time, I was just motivated to try and get there, and had no one to turn to to show me how to do it. So, I had to delay my entry into the world until the the mid-90's when I was told that while they appreciated my willingness to convey humour and information into the run-ups and walk-downs, that really wasn't what they were looking for. They just needed me to frontsell the songs and never forget to tease the songs after the big clock stopset and never ever backsell a song or even frontsell the current song. Just make sure I opened and closed with the station call letters.
It was just a few months later that ClearChannel and Infinity invaded what used to be a small station mentality in a top 25 market. The hope for radio may ironically lie in XM/Sirius with the narrowly progammed stations that they have (The Coldplay station, anyone?) and the nearly limitless bandwidth that they possess.

How true! How true!!! Remember Wolfman Jack in "American Graffiti"? It really used to be that way; the jock was a personality, an entertainer. And to a great extent used to be able to pick and play the songs and actually - GASP!!! - take REQUESTS!!!
Now we're reduced to afterthoughts and liner-jocks. Be sure to keep the break under 15 seconds. Be sure to keep the music moving. You MUST read at least one sponsor liner per hour. And of course, the music is all in the computer, unchangeable, and preprogrammed as the result of some unseen focus group done in some unknown city by some unknown entity. Sigh.

A bit of a story... back in the early 80's I actually had the Wolfman sit in on my shift at a radio staion I was with. So we did the show together...playin oldies and just fooling around on the air. It was like a 6 hour interview. I have to tell you it was one of the HIGHLIGHTS of my radio career. I have the whole thing on reel to reel tape but I'm afraid to open the box, cause I don't know what condition the tape will be in. Plus I don't have a tape player. Maybe the Smithsonian could help...lol

Duuuude... I think that that I would've been so starstruck that he would've had to do my shift for me, since I would just become a blathering mess. Celebrity and legends have a way of rendering me speechless. How's that for a career hinderence?
