Default Auditioning

Hi Julie,

Being new to the field, I would like do some auditioning as practice. I am taking courses and workshops and plan to continue throughout my career. I have my home studio up and plan to upgrade as I move forward.

Will that hurt my chances of future audtions if I'm not "ready for prime time"?

Hi JR,

Auditioning for practice is not bad at all. HOwever, as to how it will affect your future... it depends on the situation.

If you're auditioning on web sites like voices.com, no, it won't hurt. You'll get lots of practice, and if you bid very low, you might get your first job. There are a lot of jobs that we often refer to as "bottom feeder" jobs. But they're perfect for new talent to get their feet wet.

BUT, if you are hoping to sign iwth a talent agent... DO NOT submit a demo or audition of any kind until you are ready. you don't want them to remember you as not good enough!

The best way to improve, by the way, is to read an audiobook... notg for anyone else...but for yourself. Read a few pages a day. You'll get practice cold reading, andyou'll see improvement by the end. An added bonus...you've got a CHristmas present for mom! :)

Workshops are great... I know.. I teach them! (See www.voice-overs.com/images/WhirlwindSacramento) BUT the practice in between workshops is where you see the most improvement. YOu have to take what you learn and practice it to refine your craft. Every day you don't practice (if you're not working) is one day farther from your goal.

Best of luck in your career!!!!
Julie

Julie,

Much appreciate the guidance. I have been reading and will continue to read daily. I just want to start recording and submitting. I don't want to be a bottom-feeder but I know you have to start somewhere. I'm currently looking to do some non-profit stuff for good causes locally.

Are there any workshops in the Vancouver area that you might recommend...Seattle isn't that far from here either.

Thanks,

JR

I don't know of any workshops in Vancouver, but if Seattle isn't too far... the Sacramento isn't (an hour flight from Seattle) so why not join us at the Whirlwind Workshop Sacramento?

You will get lots of practice, lots of tips. It will be worth your time and expense to come here. I have never had a talent disappointed that they came! Ask Kristen Udowitz (kristen@nachoaveragevoice.com) She had NO experience when she came flew from the NE to San Antonio to train with me. Now she works regularly for Discovery Channel and DIY.

When looking for a workshop... don't just look for the LOCAL... look for the BEST! It's worth it!

Info on my workshop with Pat Fraley is at this link.

It would be awesome if you could join us!

Thanks Julie, I'd love to attend but don't think I can manage this one. I'm subscribed to your V-zine so I'll know when some others are coming up.

Cheers,
JR
