Thanks for the GREAT post Stephanie!!!

I recall Reba McEntire saying some of the same things you said in an interview one time. She said when she's out on tour she NEVER raises her voice when she is off stage. She also mentioned avoiding dairy products.... especially cheese before performing.

Great points on the additional things you suggested. I also like Julie's tip of having apples before performing. that's no problem for me... I average 2, sometimes 3, a day.

Looking forward to VOX daily.

Grace and peace...................... Steven

I'm just a voice over baby (2-3 years total, 8 months paid work), and I'm female, but I've noticed the same thing. My voice is deeper and more resonant (I would call it a wet fuzzy) in the morning and gets higher (though not high pitched) later in the day. I usually prefer my real voice, not my morning voice, for recording except for some specific cases: recording older teenage boys, deep throated sultry females, or stuff I inadvertently auditioned for in the morning or when getting sick, and got the part on that voice.

My experience is the exact same. Actually, I've told my most regular clients (which are mostly small- to medium-market radiostations), that if they want that deep, resonated movietrailer-sound, my turn-around is next morning! Of course, if there are any corrections to the copy later on and a re-take is necessary, that can be a problem.

On a funny note, I remember one time several years ago, when I was on the air every day. I'd caught the flu and had to call in sick for a few days. When I returned, my voice had a remarkable deep, resonant tone, very different from my normal pitch. On air with a caller online, I remember an incident where the caller had spoken for some time with me just listening quietly, and the broadcast processor had build up the gain, due to the nature of "Automatic Gain Control". At some point, I added an "uh-huh" to the conversation, and the sound of my own voice, amplified by the processor, scared the s**t out of me - seriously, it nearly made my headphones fly of my head :-)

Stephanie, Julie, Brett; thanks for the great advice and interesting info. It's very helpful to know some "tech-stuff" about your instrument.

Well, its been awhile since I posted this so I guess its about time for me to chime in again.

Thanks to everyone for adding in all of the great stories and suggestions. This was very informative.

As far as my own issue, I think I may have found part of the issue; Ice in drinks and Diet Green Tea. I used to drink Diet Ice tea at every lunch and, since it was hot, I was using ice in my water in the afternoon. Since I stopped both of these practices I don't seem to have as much of an issue anymore. Also, I tend to run through some vocal exercises through out the day which seems to keep things fresh. So, I'll have to see if things go for an extended period of time.

Stephanie -- Many thanks for posting this on Voices.com. One question though. You mentioned in your earlier post :
" Conserve your voice - talking on the phone is a major voice killer"
I have spoke with Spike Spencer, a great Anime and Commercial VO actor, and he says the first thing he does in the morning is jump on the phone and start calling people and talking to them to warm his voice up. Is there something in particular about talking on the phone that you see as putting some sort of stress on the voice? I seems interesting that there are two different takes on this.

Thanks again to everyone that has posted thus far in the thread.

Jon

Hi, I realize this thread is old, but I wanted to jump in with a book I read about the voice. It has some great warmups; anyone used them?

Make Your Voice Heard, by Chuck Jones

Thanks, and nice to meet everyone.

I hate to break it to you, but numerous studies have proven conclusively that milk and dairy products have no bearing on phlegm production or should negatively affect an individuals ability to speak or sing. That said, allergies to milk and dairy products are more common than many think and often present rather mildly. If you suspect that dairy is causing any difficulties with your ability to speak, sing, breath, etc. then you need to see an allergist and get checked out. You could have additional allergies as well or there could be some issue you are overlooking, in your belief that dairy products are the culprit.

I recall doing an ensemble job a few years back with about a dozen top v.o. talents. For lunch? Lasagna. And nobody passed it up or had issue.

I happen to keep very detailed records regarding my auditioning habits and thus far there appears to be no correlation regarding the time of day I audition and booking rates, however it would seem that auditioning or working much past 8pm doesn't tend to suit me, because I am an early riser and I am typically too tired to turn in a good performance past 8pm.

My voice is best in the morning, too, although there have been times when I've nailed auditions later in the day. My preference, though, is to get behind the mic in the morning.

Carson....call me LOL
