Default I asked this in the newbie thread, but...

I wanted to get your opinion specifically. I have read a lot of your advice and respect your input greatly. My question is, what is the best way to get rid of the "radio mentality"? As a friend and fellow VO artist(He is really good, I am just getting going) told me, "After years of radio you have trained your brain and voice to act a certain way. As soon as you turn on the mic, you, by default, go into that radio mode". He says this is the hardest thing to overcome, yet the most important to becoming successful as A VO artist. Your input is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Eric

If it's alright, I'd like to step in.

As a former "radio guy", I've learned to appreciate life on the outside. When you're in it, you think it's the ONLY way to be, live, breathe, speak, think...

And since you're looking for a tweak on so many levels, I'd start small:

1) Ditch the cans. At least, for now. That headgear affects how you hear yourself, AND is part of your habit... so freak yer brain and hide 'em..

2) Stop listening to the radio for awhile.

3) Listen to NPR when you go back to listening. Very normal presentations, not much put on. It's a nice reminder that you can just "talk".

Listen to as many voice folks as possible to get the idea behind those "isms" of this side of things. I'm sure the gang here at v-o/f will recommend acting classes, and could send you in the right direction.

Send me some audio: chadd@piercevoice.com I'll tell you what radio-isms I hear. I can be very Cowell that way.

Best!

Thanks for the input Chadd. I sent some audio your way. The things I am doing to get away from the "radio guy" reads are #1 I am taking acting classes this summer, the focus will be mostly improv. After taking acting classes I am going to go with some voice coaching. As far as using my headphones...I NEVER have used headphones when doing Voice work. So that part was not a problem. Thanks again for the input. I will be looking forward to your response.
