Default Getting an agent...

In this "day of the Internet" Is it possible to get an agent to represent you if you are geographically challeged? With home studios, ISDN etc?

If so, what is the proper protocol to try and obtain an agent in this fashion?

Hey bud!

I'm in the process of writing a book devoted to all things relating to voice-over agents.

The answer to your question is yes, but it depends on the agent, what they are looking for/needing, and what you have to bring to the table. It's not uncommon for an LA or NYC talent to have other agents around the country. But it's much harder the other way around. It isn't impossible. But it's hard. Unless you are well known and (or) have major credits, most LA or NYC agents want you living local. Even with the availability of ISDN, they still want to know you are available at a moment's notice to get to a session or audition. It's probably easier to have agents in smaller markets than LA/NYC/Chi.

But again, it isn't impossible!!!!!!!

The best way to get an agent's attention is to be referred. You can submit yourself, but it's hard to get their interest without a reliable referral. And keep in mind there are oodles of union talent in LA who can't get arrested with the VO agents. There are less than 20 agents, and tons of unrepresented actors. So they are going to sign local talent before out of towners.

All that said, ya got nothing to lose by trying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

;-)

Thanks Bob! Yes... I'm noticing it's a lot of "who ya know."

Along that line... I notice some pretty horrible voice overs sometimes in high profile stuff. I always wonder "how they get that gig?"
