Hi everyone,
I'm just starting out in this crazy voiceover world. I'm studying with a VO coach here in NYC and taking some improv classes. My background is in comedy (improv, sketch) and I recently did an animation for a friend. You can watch it here:

Anyway, I have a few questions:
A lot of you do jobs from home studios. Is it possible to make a living without having that type of equipment?
I'm hoping to cut my first demo in the next few months. Any advice on how to get my name out there once I have the demo? I love animation but I've mostly been working on ads with my coach. Should my first demo be all ads, or characters or??? I know a lot of animators here in New York and I'd like to be able to showcase characters in my demo. But I feel I also need to be marketable for more commercial jobs. I'm just worrying about the financial strain of making multiple demos. Words of wisdom??

Hey Joanna!

First of all, I want to refer you to this page from my website:
Bob Bergen Official Web Site: FAQ (http://bobbergen.com/faq.htm)

Many of the answers to your questions are there. After reading this if you have any more questions feel free to pop me a note at porkysvoice@aol.com

My biggest concern is, are you ready for a demo?? I ask this because you say you have a coach. But the questions you ask are elementary. And any good coach should have been steering you in the right direction.

I took a look at that Sid and Nancy cartoon. Funny stuff!!

Thanks for that link. I'm definitely not ready for a demo so maybe that's why we haven't really discussed it yet. Regardless that cleared up some of my demo confusion. Does anybody know where other hubs of VO production are besides NY and LA? Is stuff going on in Canada? Elsewhere?

Work is everywhere. If you're happy in NYC...stay where you are.
