I've voiced a number of spots since my last posting here, but something even cooler has been in works for a Meetup group I belong to. A Few months back I signed up for this local Meetup group called Media Associates Group (MAG) which initially was created by a group of laid off TV professionals started by a very fine lady Sue Peppers with Peppers TV. Its been a really great group to meet with and has provided me with some cool local connections in and out of the local TV scene. One of the goals of the group was to gather folks in different facets of the TV business namely those that have been laid off or retired, and use the wealth of knowledge of the group to create projects that could be sold.

The first project was started a couple of months ago just as a fluke. There was one member who has attended a number of Sacramento's Second Saturdays; a open art show that pretty much takes up the entire downtown area. While attending these, he would video tape various artists, displays and local venues. He had mentioned this to another person in the group who had 45 years experience in TV and was once the Production Manager of a local TV studio. These two guys, along with a few others in the group got together and took the video as well as creating new vid including interviews of the artists as well as the TV vet writing and hosting the show, created a TV show depicting the coolness of Second Saturday. Once they had something that they could show to others, Sue had the idea to market it to the local TV stations and ended up landing airtime with the local PBS station KVIE. They met with the president of the TV station and he mentioned that they just happened to have spot open in their Arts Alive show. After some negotiations, KVIE bought into the show and provided funding.

Last night I as well as over 100 others attended the Premiere of the show at a local art gallery. There was a wide variety of folks there including the President of KVIE as well as number of the artists featured in the vid. It was a great time with wine, food and great people. With all this, the show will air tonight at 7:00 pm on KVIE, and then again Friday 11/6 at 4pm and Sunday 11/8 at 6pm.
Some of the vid can be viewed online at KVIE:

This was long winded but it just shows what happens when a few great folks take a bad situation such as being laid off and instead of making excuses they just use their talents to create something of their own. I am just proud to be around such gifted and talented people and hopefully something will rub off of me. Opportunity is always there, you just have to be willing to let it in when it comes a knocking.

There's a fine line between "I just got laid off" and "my middleman just got out of the way!" Glad these folks have found it.

This is what's often called "market forces," and it's what's supposed to keep big corporations honest. If they dump experienced, highly-paid people in the name of saving money, or simply drive them away by not paying them what they're worth, they should always understand the threat that they'll suddenly have those folks regroup as a new competitor, and lose market share and revenue.

Only when we get lazy or can't see the self-employment options are we really stuck.
