View Full Version : Any experience with Voice Hunter?

Does anyone have any experience with Voice Hunter? It's another web service that "represents" voice talent for a fee. They've got several "levels" at which you can join but it looks like to get to any meaningful level the fee is pretty darn steep.

I've got no problem investing in my career but with fees like this they better produce something besides another tide of auditions.

Just wondering if anyone here has ever tried them, worked with them, whatever.

I recall looking at them a while back.
I decided I didn't see enough value for the price of admission...

Anyone actually use the service? How's it working out?

Hey bud!

A few years ago I decided to give Voicehunter a try. If you've read my posts here, you know I'm a big ol advocate of the gamble/risk. You can't grow without a gamble.

I joined Voicehunter with the philosophy of I'll give it a year. If I don't get any work, I tried and will have a nice tax deduction.

I started booking stations right away, which MORE than pay for my original investment and renewal combined for years to come. I have several stations around the country. I find the folks at Voicehunter to be very proactive and give them full credit for my imaging career. Fortunately my agent also has an imaging department, so between the 2 of em I'm well represented. But I wasn't able to establish a relationship with the imaging department of my agency without Voicehunter. I had no track record, no demo, etc. So my agent had nothing to work with until I started working with Voicehunter.

NOW-you need a top notch imaging demo. And I DO NOT, repeat DO NOT recommend people make their own demos!!!!!! This is not a contest as to who can make the best demo for themself I advise you hire a producer or program director from a local station and ask if they'd produce your demo. And you need a signature sound/brand. Just because you can read copy doesn't mean you are marketable. No one needs another voice. They need YOUR personality. I myself do many of the Joe/Jack formats, as well as oldies. Each format demands a different style.

You can hear my demos here:

Good luck!!!

Bob is right you need to know when to hold em and when to fold em

Great info as always, Bob.

I haven't done any imaging myself, so that explains why I saw so little at VH.

And spot on about having a pro demo beforehand. I applaud those that can be engineers and VO's, but I'm not one of 'em!

I may tread into the imaging waters at some future point, but that's a bit off target for me right now.

I'm gonna have to listen to Jack more closely now!,

I myself knew nada about imaging before Voicehunter. Voicehunter, which ventures into many aspects of VO, have more imaging activity than any other genre. Like everything there are no guarantees. But if it works out you can make good money!

So how soon do these kinda sites usually respond if they're interested? I sent out word over the weekend with this link to my "demo" http://piercevoice.com/images/ChaddPierceDemo.mp3 (which, if you've heard my recent Hotseat piece, is pretty much the same thing with some extra character work thrown in)... haven't seen anything back.

Okay, a day & a half may be too soon to get impatient, but I have a freaking rejection complex. I know I could do the work... just having trouble with my diplomatic approaches to the industry.

Any sound-offs on how long it took them to approve your demo?

Grassyass,

Chadd

Hi Chad!

I think you are really good!! The demo might be a tad long. How long is it?? It feels longer than a minute. Maybe it isn't, but it still feels too long. And I think it's a little character heavy. But that's just me. They may love it.

Pop Voicehunter another note. It could be a matter that they have conflicts. I do not know if they, like agents, only contact you if they are interested.

As for your rejection complex, I say with all due respect, get over it! From what I hear on your demo, you are good!! You can't invest a moment of rejection anxiety to your life and career. Rejection will always be a part of the game. We can't control it.

Keep in mind that there are many reasons why we get rejected. If you are talented it has nothing to do with your abilities. It could be a conflict. The buyers may not need your "type" at the moment. But if you are good, you WILL be remembered. It's all about the timing. If you are good, and the timing is right, you will hit a home run. If you suck, and the timing is right, there's no hope. Trust your talents! Enjoy the journey!!! And make this the first day in your career that you make the decision to never invest a negative thought. You'll find you will be much more proactive. And you'll get noticed!!! Trust me!

Bob, you are a real positive thinker. i will learn from my admiration of that.

Voice Hunter DID indicate wanting a piece 60-90 seconds. I figured, what's a lil' extra if I can fit their window. Perhaps they are leading me on? Was this a test?

The process I went thru was an "application". I'm APPLYING to give them my money. :) That's where I get the idea that they would contact ME if they like.

I... oh, God, am I allowed to say this? I know I'm good.

*pause for lightning bolt*

That's where I'm feeling stuck. All these hard working talents out there taking courses and attending lectures... I've never done that stuff but am very fortunate to have a full background of vocal usage in its place.

I'm missing that one crucial part, selling myself. I guess that's why all we truely want in life is a good cheerleading, job-getting, superpartner. Hmm. There might be something to that...

Hey Chad! I sent my demos to VoiceHunter several months ago. It took a few days to get back to me, and they were very nice! I especially appreciated their honesty. They liked my demos a lot, but explained they get very little work for someone with my vocal range. They didn't want me to spend my money and not see a return on my investment. They mentioned they would hang on to my demos in case something came up! (They also mentioned Bob Bergen and asked if I knew him since I did character work...I said, HECK YA- I LOVE BOB BERGEN!)

I was also encouraged to put together an imaging demo, which I am in the process of. So, if it takes a few days, don't sweat it! I'm sure they will love you.

Chadd - I’m not sure what the typical response time for Voice Hunter is, but for me it was less than 24 hours.

Bob - Thanks for the positive comments regarding Voice Hunter. On a Whim, and based on your comments, I submitted my new set of demos to them yesterday (I did mention your comments here), and low and behold I was contacted by Voice Hunter this morning. The person I spoke to seemed to be impressed with my new demos (outside of some minor touch ups) and wanted to have me listed on their site. My response was sort of line of “Holly Cr#%!!!!!”. I had to hold still and not jump and down with excitement. This is the coolest thing to happen to me in a long time, if not forever, and I have Dennis Goode, you, Julie and everyone else that I have spoken to regarding VO to thank for this.
Look for me to be listed on Voice Hunter November 1st.

Jon

I'll have to ask Discover's permission (unless his brother Mastercard wants to come instead)... Not sure yet.

CONGRATS, BTW!!!

Pretty wild, I too spent quite a while on the phone with them today!! Just sent in last night, and there we are! Seems that they really take a more hand-on approach to marketing (and, of course, this is paid for thru membership and commission) but it seems to me that it might be more bang for the buck in the long run than the hit and miss and miss and miss of V123. Gabby has my info and I'll be going live on the site as well (Spotlight for now tho she thinks I should be a Showcase member, I can buy up later when the bread is in)!

Great job youse other guys too, let's get a virtual pizza!! Thanks Bob Bergen for the testimonial earlier or I may not have checked them out!

Awesome, Jon!!!!!

I am so excited for you! We should celebrate over a latte!

Cheryl Kay told me your news today... I've been a little busy with my own VO lately and haven't been on forum for a few days!
