I've been "stalking" these boards for a while and decided it was time to actually post something. As a little background on myself, I'm an Air Force bandsman who also has a background in singing. Over the years, I've been told I have a "radio" voice (I know, not necessarily a good thing for VO), so in last year I decided to pursue that. I've been recording radio spots for the Air Force Academy radio station here and there, and I've served as the emcee and/or narrator for several events. I've been practicing trying be much more conversational in anything I record or speak live using techniques from sources such as The Art of Voice Acting.

I decided to make my first contribution here by recording a short Cnet article for the Volunteer forum. It will be interesting recording with my MXL DRK, M-Audio Fast Track Pro, and a laptop while on the road (our group travels quite a bit performing public concerts); I'll probably have to pull a comforter over my head to reduce the room noise (and my colleague across the hall practicing flute). At home I use an Audio-Technica AT4040 and a PreSonus TubePre connected to the M-Audio interface.

I plan on posting things here and there for people to critique, as that would be the best way for me to learn. I'll look for some acting classes to help further my interests.

Hi Gene (uh...) Welcome!

Great! Can't wait to hear your read on the forum...

Sounds like you've got a plan of action - important in any business.

BTW, love the user name (not sure how many will get it).

Just call me "Marduk",

BTW, love the user name (not sure how many will get it).I registered with that name originally because I usually prefer to be somewhat anonymous on bulletin boards. I've noticed on here that people prefer to address others by name and not the name of a Lovecraft deity (in this case).

To add to what I posted earlier, I may eventually get up the nerve to put up some sort of web site.

Here is a photo of my setup here (yes, it's a crappy cell phone shot):

Hi Gene! Welcome! I'm sure you could tell us a lot about recording on the go and I'd love to hear about it. Looking forward to hearing more from you. I'd love to hear some of your singing too (that's how I got started in this funny business of VO, myself...). :D

I'm sure you could tell us a lot about recording on the go and I'd love to hear about it.

Equipment-wise, there's not really much to it: microphone (hopefully with a good case), audio interface (microphone inputs on laptops are not good), and a laptop. In the photo above, I had my desk stand set up, but as it turns out the acoustics in that room were not good for recording.

Sometimes, the less-than-stellar hotels can be good for recording. In the picture below, I had my mic and a floor stand surrounded by three towels that I hung from a tiled ceiling (the tiles themselves were pretty good for deadening the sound in the room).

I've heard that about hotels, yes. An interesting solution to recording on the go ... Thanks for the picture! :)
