Hi everyone, I'm what many would call a rookie. I've been training now for awhile and I would like to start doing some auditions that don't require an agent. Just wondering if you have any ideas as to where I can find smaller project auditions or just auditions in general. Thanks so much guys. Look forward to working with you.

Hello. You can always sign up with voices.com or other similar sites. It does cost you to be a member, but it allows you to post demos and bid on various jobs. Hope that helps.

You might also try some audio drama groups online. Most are free to join, and non-paying gigs.

Dream Realms (dregold.net) is a smaller one, and Pendant Audio has a lot going on too. Plenty of others out there as well.

You may also want to do some volunteer reading - several groups for that too, depending on your city.

Cheers,

Hi Rosemary -- And Congrats on the nice gig from Craig's List! This might sound dumb -- but I couldn't find one VO ad on Craig's List. Which section(s) contain such postings?

Thanks a bunch!

Rosemary;

Where did you post and how did you post. I've been wanting to post one there but not sure what to say?

In the SF Bay Area there are VO gigs listed under Gigs - Talent. Usually one or two a week - some pay a little and some are no-budget. From time to time there's a job listed under Community - Artists. But the best section to check is Jobs - TV/Film/Video - those listings in this section are paid postings and cost $75. So if someone is paying $75 to find an actor, you know they'll have a budget for the job. I landed one there about 6 months ago that paid union rates. They said they didn't want to pay the 20% commission to an agent so they posted on CL. I gave my agent their cut but it came from my pocket rather than the clients.

I know a number of folks who have landed a gig on CL that turned out to be quite lucrative - one freind got a gig for Chevron and has had tons of repeat business from it

I've landed two small ones from Craigslist, and Dave is exactly right on the areas to look. I wander around the listing about once every 2 weeks or so. Plus you sometimes find new production houses that are out there. Unfortunately, there are a lot of "bad apples" that are just trying to take advantage of the actor. Always use a bit of caution. I don't give any phone numbers, just email.

I'm a little obsessive - I check 2 or 3 times a day. The early bird gets the worm.

Tony is correct - you have to have your wits about you. In fact, in the Bay Area an AFTRA person used to post about once a week stating what VO rates should be and how we shouldn't underestimate our value. Just as a rising tide raises all boats, a sinking one ...
Many of the folks who post on CL are looking for something so specific (Gilbert Gottfreid sound or Obama sound-alike) and have no budget or are willing to pay $20

Wow Dave! I guess I gotta start checking it more often! Bay area eh...let's see... :)

So when posting an add saying that I am a voice artist on craigslist how should it be worded?

You mean posting for services offered? If so do it under Services/Creative. I do just a little quick bullet point thing that says I offer voice and audio with a link to my site. I keep the auto email that craigslist generates as the direct response. Honestly, I haven't had much success off it.

Hi Everyone,

I'm a relatively new voiceover guy from South Wales UK.....trying to earn a living but its extremely hard and competitive over here....as I was aware of when I started over a year ago.....I shall keep plugging away, but's nice to look and hear from other VO's to see how everyones doing.

Cheers
